Sernicoli Collection

An aspiring collector

The exhibit hall houses paintings and silver that belonged to Carlo Sernicoli of Modena, an art lover and collector who was motivated by the desire to recover works associated with the artistic culture of his region.

The roughly thirty important paintings in the collection provide a broad overview of Emilian art from the 15th to the 18th centuries, including notable works by Giovanni da Modena, Bartolomeo Passerotti, Elisabetta Sirani, Guercino, Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Donato Creti, to name a few. Of note among the 20th century paintings are works by Pompeo Borra, Virgilio Guidi and Ubaldo Oppi.

The silverware, which ties in well with the collection on exhibit in room 9 “L’idea del Museo”, is attributable to artisans who were active in Modena from the 17th to 19th centuries and is a priceless testament to the production of the city’s goldsmith workshops.
