Archaeological Map Office

The Archaeological Map of the Municipality of Modena is included in the Quadro Conoscitivo (City Profile) of the current Municipal Structural Plan (Settlement System – Historical-Archaeological System – Restrictions Chart – History and Archaeology)* and constitutes the point of reference for applying protections to archaeological assets.

The map, the specific norms and the procedures that are associated with it are drawn up and managed by the Archaeological Map Office of the Civic Museum of Modena, which oversees updates to it, in accordance with the approved agreement with the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città metropolitana di Bologna e le province di Modena, Reggio Emilia e Ferrara (Superintendence Archaeology Fine Arts and Landscape for the City of Bologna and the Provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia and Ferrara) (council resolution n. 222 of 23.04.2019). The attached convention establishes that the Civic Museum’s institutional functions include the safeguarding of the municipal archaeological patrimony and the planning of the Archaeological Potentiality Map. In collaboration with the Territorial Planning and Urban Renewal Sector, the Archaeological Potentiality Map was drawn up; it is an integral part of the General Urban Plan, along with updates to the data bank of the Archaeological Urban Map and the municipal territory of Modena.

The historical-archaeological safeguarding system has been one of the urban municipal tools since 1990. The Archaeological Restrictions Map contains mapping of known archaeological data and even extends protection to the principle of archaeological potentiality; indeed, it even represents differentiated areas of archaeological potentiality along Via Emilia (which coincide with the location of the ancient road and in the area along the sides of the road where the necropolises were located in the Roman era), corresponding to the area of Mutina and its urban expansions and medieval and modern fortification perimeters.

The Civic Museum also drafts and updates the data bank of archaeological sites for the whole province, in accordance with the convention with the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la città metropolitana di Bologna e le province di Modena, Reggio Emilia e Ferrara (council resolution n. 222 del 23/4/2019). Upon request, provincial municipalities and institutions may be provided with a copy of the data bank, the updates and the revisions.
