Asia

Stories of distant peoples

After the opening of the Suez Canal on 17 November, 1869, Italy, attracted by the agricultural, industrial and mineral resources of the Asian regions, successfully entered the trade routes towards India, Burma and Japan. This material does not, therefore, reflect as much a specific ethnographic interest as the curiosity for rare and exotic objects that animated those who visited those countries.

In the display case is a collection of Burmese lacquerware, a few Indian manuscripts and several examples of Japanese handcraft: pottery, porcelain and bronze objects, all of which were produced expressly for the purpose of exporting to the West.
