Journey to the edge of the world
The precise annotations on the inventory and the information provided by Loria in letters made it possible to reproduce in the exhibit the expedition itinerary. The populations encountered during this trip lived on the coast or in the hills immediately inland in the southeastern most part of the island and in the adjacent archipelago.
The comparison between objects from different villages highlights the distinctive features of the individual groups, while at the same time underscoring the homogeneity of the material culture of these populations: from the bark cloth garments to the feather ornaments; from weapons for hunting, fishing and war to the drums and the shields used in dances, to the refined carving work that decorates the watercraft.
