Art and Archaeology library

The Civic Museum of Modena boasts a historical collection made up of over 500 volumes dating from the 16th to the 19th century, including the prestigious bequeathal by Tarquinia Molza, which a recent study confirmed as having come from a collection belonging to the early 16th century Modenese humanist Lodovico Castelvetro, who was also Molza’s tutor.

Also of great interest are the volumes that comprised the work libraries of the first directors of the nascent Civic Museum, along with 1,300 pamphlets. The library includes over 20,000 publications and numerous specialized journals, acquired primarily through exchanges with other institutes. Among these are over 9,000 archaeology, history and ethnography publications and a hundred or so Italian and foreign periodicals. The over 12,000 volumes of art, divided in alphabetical order by author in the Catalogue of modern book patrimony  document various areas of the museum collections (weapons, decorative papers, ceramics, musical and scientific instruments, textiles and glasswork).

The periodicals section currently holds 80 publications.
