South America

The collection is made up of three cores of 19th century material. Of these, two collections in particular stand out: the splendid antique collection of feather ornaments produced by the Mundurucù and Indios of the upper Rio Negro Basin, which was formed in the 1840s by the Modenese doctor Luigi Bompani, and a recently acquired core of Yanomami Indios material. The feather ornaments bear witness to an art form that was once widespread in various regions of South America, but has now been almost completely abandoned.
