From the Amazon to the Museum

The exhibition “Voci, Saperi, Patrimoni. Dall'Amazzonia al Museo” is presented thanks to the collaboration with the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the University of Bologna (UNIBO) and the Projeto Nova Cartografia Social da Amazônia.

Voci, Saperi, Patrimoni. Dall'Amazzonia al Museo
(Voices, Knowledge, Heritage. From the Amazon to the Museum)

6 December 2025 – 22 March 2026

They come from the Brazilian Amazon, bringing with them their voices and their knowledge: they are the “Living Museums” connected to the Projeto Nova Cartografia Social da Amazônia.

Driven by the urgency to preserve their territories and cultures, they assert an identity with complex and deeply rooted origins.

The unprecedented dialogue between a “traditional” museum and these “centres of sciences and knowledge,” developed together with lecturers, researchers, and scholars from Italian and Brazilian universities, invites visitors to reflect on the very idea of the museum and on the need to rethink ethnological heritage beyond narratives, representations, and classifications that have historically been constructed about others.

DOWNLOAD THE INVITATION

The exhibition, on display until 22 March 2026, represents the first public presentation of a project involving the Civic Museum of Modena, the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the University of Bologna, and the “Living Museums” of the Projeto Nova Cartografia Social da Amazônia.

The exhibition opens during the two weeks (1–13 December) in which Modena and Bologna host representatives of seven Brazilian Amazonian communities. They are present to share the voices and knowledge of the “Living Museums” through meetings, exhibitions, debates, performances, and events dedicated to the protection of their territories, cultures, and identities.
