Time capsule. From Mutina to the future

In the Sala del Pozzo (Hall of the Well) of the Ghirlandina bell tower there is a time capsule that holds hundreds of messages and items entrusted to the future by visitors to the exhibition Mutina Splendidissima. La città romana e la sua eredità (Splendid Mutina. The Roman city and its legacy, 27 November, 2017 – 8 April, 2018). For the exhibition, which commemorated the 2,200th anniversary of the founding of Mutina as well as the 20th anniversary of the Unesco site, there was an emphasis on participation in order to reinforce the themes on which it was based: memory, identity, conservation and passing down to future generations. The capsule, which was hermetically sealed on 8 April, 2018, will be reopened in 2099, a thousand years after the laying of the first stone of the Cathedral, a symbol of the connection between the Roman city and the medieval and modern ones, when the community of Modena once again engages in honoring its past.

The time capsule is viewable on days when the Ghirlandina tower is open to the public: www.visitmodena.it
